Democrats’ Shutdown an Exercise in Brazen Lying, Hypocrisy, and Cynicism

The Senate finally got past the Democrats’ filibuster of the pending continuing resolution on Sunday night and passed the continuing resolution on Monday evening, paving the way for the Government shutdown to end. (The resolution still needs to pass the House and that vote is planned for Wednesday.)

The whole shutdown charade reeked of cynicism and desperation for the Democrats. Petrified of the Democrats’ rabid progressive base, Democratic Senate “leader” Chuck Schumer buckled to the pressure to fight President Trump on every front with every weapon at hand. In effect, Schumer gave the progressive base the temper tantrum they demanded.
Having followed the progressives into the cul-de-sac of a shutdown, the Democrats formulated their post hoc rationalization for the shutdown: extending the temporary Obamacare subsidies permanently. What incompetence. After being bullied into a shutdown, the Democrats highlighted the abysmal failure of their signature health care policy. The Democrats created Obamacare entirely on their own and are responsible for its complete failure to lower health insurance costs.

(Even the names of Democratic bills are dishonest. From the Affordable Care Act to the Inflation Reduction Act, you can reliably predict what Democratic bills will not accomplish from their names.)

And what tool did the principle-less Democrats use to shut down the Government? Why the filibuster, of course. Remember the filibuster? The one that Joe Biden and Barack Obama and the rest of the Democratic Party labeled as a relic of the Jim Crow era when they held the majority? Suddenly the filibuster morphed into a critical, sacred protection of minority rights. Amazing how that happens.

Shamelessness is all the Democrats have to offer, though, because after deploying the “Jim Crow” filibuster to shut down the Government, the Democrats blamed Republicans! Even as every Republican voted to reopen the Government.

This is what happens when a political party knows the press will carry its water. The Democrats lied with abandon knowing the press would cover for them.

Now that 2025 elections are over and Democrats have cynically reaped electoral rewards for their hissy fit, they’re caving to end the shutdown. And the feral progressives that demand they fight everything Trump does are up in arms. Nothing less than a revolution will satisfy them.

Fortunately, more mature heads have prevailed and the air traffic snafus the Democrats gifted us will soon be over. But make no mistake, the biggest takeaway from the shutdown stupidity is that it is the revolutionary progressive base that’s running the Democratic Party now.
