Syrian Chaos: Democrats Silent

The long-festering failure of Democratic foreign policy in Syria took another tragic turn last week as Islamist militants stormed the town of Suweida and launched a barbaric attack on that city’s Druze and Christian populations. The photos and videos are gruesome. Entire families executed. Women kidnapped, undoubtedly to be forced into sexual slavery. Peaceful inhabitants forced to jump from balconies. It was, without question, a genocidal event. The bloodlust of the Islamist militants is stomach churning.

Remarkably, the same progressive Democrats who have been screaming over a non-existent genocide in Gaza are silent. The same progressive Democrats who endlessly accuse Republicans of waging a War on Women have nothing to say about the rapes and kidnappings of women and girls from their homes for sexual abuse. The UN bureaucrats so beloved by the Democrats who falsely blamed Israel for bombing a hospital have nothing to say about Islamist militias rampaging through a Suweida hospital’s halls, killing every patient, doctor, and nurse they could find.

Once again, a Middle East conflict has exposed the bankruptcy at the heart of progressivism. Human rights are valued only to the extent they can be weaponized against political opponents. Violence is only to be spoken of if it can be blamed on the enemies of progressives. If the violence is perpetrated by Islamist fanatics with whom anti-Western progressives find themselves in temporary alliance, mum’s the word.

Thankfully, the Trump Administration is working hard to broker an end to the Islamist barbarism, and the Israel Defense Forces have deployed to try to stop the violence, protect the Druze and Christians in Suweida from further massacres, and deliver humanitarian aid. We can be proud of the Trump Administration’s efforts. They are a far cry from Obama’s and Biden’s serial blunders that opened the door to Russian and Iranian occupation of Syria and led to vicious Syrian Civil War, the effects of which we are still dealing with today.
