On January 8, 2025, Senator Saddam Salim (D) of Senate District 37 (Vienna-Tysons) introduced Virginia Senate bill SB1009, which allows Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) in local elections.
Senate Vote
The Virginia Senate passed the bill on a party-line vote, with 21 Democratvotes in favor and 19 Republican votes against. This highlights the contentious nature of the proposed changes and the divided opinions among legislators and political parties. Currently the bill is now in the House of Delegates.
Current Status
The House of Delegates is currently considering the bill, which has been referred to the Committee on Privileges and Elections. On Monday, February 10, the House Election Administration sub-committee voted to send the measure to the full Privileges and Elections Committee on a strict party line vote Democrats (5 Yes), Republicans (3 No).
Understanding Ranked Choice Voting
RCV is an electoral system in which voters rank candidates in order by preference rather than selecting a single candidate. If no candidate receives a majority of first-choice votes, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their votes are redistributed to the voters’ next choices. This process continues until a candidate secures a majority.
In 2024, eight out of nine states rejected RCV ballot initiatives. Virginia Democrats are determined to introduce Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) to Virginia. Let’s not let them do that.
Call to Action
Click to contact Committee Delegates on the Privileges and Elections Committee to urge them to reject SB1009-Ranked Choice Voting, and SB760-Extended Post Election Deadline to receive and cure mail-in ballots.
